Turn a Pendant with a DIY Dux Chuck
Thank you Mike watched another guy turn this type of flower vase and it was a lot more involved than the way you did it. I like your way so much better and I want to try one.
I liked that you were able to capture the grain pattern on your piece. Nice job.
Amazing how differently each project turned out. I love these 4 way videos 😊
I've watched 3 of the 4 and, so far, like yours best. They're all good.
The procedure was spot on and well executed. The vase is nice. Artist friendly critique comment: The black was a bit overpowering and might have benefited from a heavier sand back before application of the subsequent colors.
I agree i love the problem solving aspect of wood turning. I watch other turners and see if I can do the same project with the tools I have at my disposal. Good job!
Great techniques and vase. I always feel like I'm in a neighbors garage watching your videos.
Just really nice. Great quality turning, close to a "10", maybe a 9 977734 approx.
I watched Richard’s before yours, interesting that both ended up similar shape but I like your tenon process to drill better, thanks
Turned out great. I always look forward to these 4 way challenges and seeing how each of you handle it. Thank you!
Thanks, Mike!
Thanks Mike. I am a relatively new turner and was looking for tips regarding how to make pendants. Your video was very helpful. I've prepared the jig and mandrel and am about ready to turn my first pendant. I was also inspired to increase the length of the mandrel to about an inch to keep my fingers farther away from the rectangular mandrel.
One thing I seem to recall when using five minute epoxy is that denatured alcohol/methylated spirits is good for cleanup. I remember that seem to be good for smoothing out excessive glue before matures.
Thanks for sharing.
OK Mike, that's for me. I'll do it this week, thanks, Stewart, south west Australia.
They are so handy. And when you think the tap is probably the cost of one faceplate and then you have all of the glue blocks you need.
Good information. Really like the idea of making the acrylic center finder. On the acrylic center finder, it seems like one could darken the engraved circles while the piece is still on the lathe.
Great idea!
Video full of great tips Mike …. Especially like the acrylic circle gauge and how easy it is to make one! As always, thanks for your time 👍🤠
Very welcome!
Interesting, Mike, and still useful after all these years. The mind becomes compartmentalised, and reminding me I have joiners' marking gauges has proved timely! Thanks. Bernard.
All good information Mike. Especially the tip on making your own acrylic center finder. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
You bet
I like the acrylic plate, but I would just start with a small divet in the center and use a compass backwards - put the pencil point in the center and scribe the lines with the sharp point. Then drill the center slightly over my center punch size. My favorite method on small squares is finger and pencil on 4 sides to make a small square in middle. Thank you for making these videos. I learn something every time I watch them.
Thanks for taking the time to share, Chuck.
That was very informative as I have bad trouble with my tailstock. Unfortunately there is a piece on the lathe and my handle is frozen. I can't move it forward or backward. Any ideas?
Slide the tailstock back. Remove the handwheel and see if some spray pentrating oil might help free it up.
An additional method I often use: a compass (divider with pencil in one leg) set to approximately half the width or diameter, swing short arcs from multiple spots around the edge. Results in a square similar to the 45deg center finder. Then change legs to swing a circle from the center and go to the band saw to cut the blank.
I use the same method. The more you do this the easier it is to find centre first time.
Thanks for sharing!
I will give that a try. Always interested in a better way, George.
Great information thanks.
Thank you, Mike!
You are welcome, Lewis.
Thanks Mike. A nice complete review. Particularly liked the arcrylic home made tip.
Glad it was helpful, Ken. Thanks for your continued support!
Mike, I like your ornamentation at the end! Really good recovery from the wood's not cooperating with you!
Thanks 👍
Pretty sure this is too old for you to see my comment, but just in case: Novice turner here & I really admire your skill & your work. I've got carbides and pretty sure they have their place- but I started with traditional tools. Your instruction on correct tool use & turning techniques are invaluable. Thanks so much for all you've done for the turning community.
Wow, thank you!
Спасибо за науку, успехов в творчестве!!!!
I use alcohol to release the glue. Drizzle it on let it set for a minute and pull the piece right off.
Thanks for sharing!
Just ran across this video. To lose a child anywhere along life's path is devastating. My condolences to the family. I thought that one could make segments of contrasting wood by rough turning the outside but matching the inside and gluing together. Next would be turning the outside and prepping for a lid of some sort. Will take time to watch the entire video in the future.
Watching the video again in anticipation for making some pendants for a craft mall. Question: Could one use a glue block for the first part of turning the wood instead of tape? On the melamine piece, how much did you offset it to drill the hole? Thanks two bunches!
Yes, absolutely. About 3/8" as I Recall. Draw a pendant and measure where you want the hole.
I just learned why i should need to use this tool. I been using a bowl gauge. Bigger, sharper. I will start used spindle gauge .
Thanks for sharing Mike. You and I suffer from the same groan when picking things up from the floor 😂 Keep up the good work, and God bless you and yours. 😊
At least we can still pick up. Not all are blessed.
My Dremel is my friend, with my etching tool, for those those small detailing things like the "j" cut on the side of the yarn bowl.
😊😊😊 I make 2 inch to 3 inch thick walking sticks with them. 6 feet or so. Stain them and lacquer them. Perfect for cheap and sustainable hobbies. I deliver and during summer Yard Crews have piles of them. They are happy for me to take a bundle or 2. Very nice results from what my friends and neighbors say. I don't sell them. I just let a person choose the one they prefer.
Well done Mike! I had a young fellow tell me that he had to learn from the mistakes of others because he knew he would never live long enough to make them all himself.
Good one!
0222 there may have been tension from expansion chuck. 0240 why is there so much chatter/noise.?!!?? operator error, maybe. 0708 yeah, just STAB it in there.! 0922 you are choking the tool. 1010 whynhel did this take so much time to do.! 1035 dum, dum, dumb 1130 not recommended.! 1208 dum, dum, dumb 1234 WHY were you even rotating the gouge AT ALL.! 1255 same question can you spell aggressiveness issues.
Thanks for taking the time to share you insights!
Thanks!
Thanks for your support!
I was turing a three corner bowl from a cube of cherry wood. During the process, the first joint on my left index finger got smacked by the corners of the wood. That was several years ago and my finger still hurts.
Ouch!
This video was too late. I have already made most of those mistakes. But thank you for sharing anyway. They are good for a refresher. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂
I look forward to reaching the point where I need a refresher -- I repeat mine often enough that I do my own refreshers. 😄
😀😀😀
Thank you so much for this video. At times, one believes he/she is the only one experiencing issues, especially when you keep seeing posts about perfect looking bowls that are “my first ever” bowl
Well said!
Hey Mike, I just watched your video and I must say that it was really informative and well-made. I was wondering if I could help you edit your videos and repurpose your long videos into highly engaging shorts? I can also make high CTR thumbnails for your channel
Not enough money from these videos to afford an editor.
Great Video made me smile after a painful bowl.
Glad you enjoyed it
Always helpful to see these videos because they help confirm assessment of root cause for many of the same issues encountered in my own turnings. Skatebacks are probably the most egregious and aggravating occurrences because of the damage done to a piece that is often nearing completion. Appreciate you sharing these incidents -- it helps make all of us better.
Well, that was fun, Mike. I had the same problem you had at 11:10. Sorry I can show a photo of my fix, but it shows often in my videos. My magnetic hold for the spindle lock is mounted on a stick with a red plastic stop sign symbol at the top that stand in front of power and speed controls. The only hard part is remembering to use that when I lock the spindle with the indexer.
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Mike. Just about every clip reminded me of things that happened to me, too. There is always that moment immediately after the event where I stop and take stock. I count fingers. I check for blood. I look for the damage to the piece and the surroundings. I say a little thank-you.
I call that forensic analysis my "moment of reflection."
I guess I'm not the only one. Turning a small walnut bowl/dish today. Saw a small crack, stabilized it and continued. Cleaning up the inside with a scraper and a small chunk came out of the rim. Couldn't see any more cracks so started to reduce the height when a big chunk blew out of the side. More hairline cracks that were not visible until it was to late. Burn pile for that one.
Mike, do you consider the thickness and width of the wood before you start? To determine what the end result might be?
Yes. I do not like turning very large live edge bowls or very small ones. Turnnng green bowls are more of a target of opportunity. I get a nice piece of green wood and turn a bowl rather than decide to turn a bowl and start looking for a certain size piece of wood. Does that answer your questiton?
